Aklavik

Aklavik is a municipality in the Northwest Territories (Canada) with 594 inhabitants (according to 2006 census ), which is mainly inhabited by the Gwichin and the Inuvialuit. It is located about 55 kilometers west of Inuvik on the Mackenzie Delta. The community is accessible from Inuvik in the winter months only by the so-called "Ice Bridges" and through the air.

Since Aklavik had always struggled with flooding and erosion, the site was abandoned in 1961 in favor of Inuvik as the administrative center of the territorial government.
