Aknīste

Aknīste ( Oknist German, Lithuanian Aknysta ) is a small city in southeastern Latvia, on the border with Lithuania.

History

The town was first mentioned in writing in 1298. In the 17th century, the area fell to Poland - Lithuania. Around 1660 Jacob Kettler started a channel project, which the Daugava on the Suseja with the Courland Aa ( lett: Lielupe ) should connect and Aknīste brought economic boom. The project was never completed and the city came in 1795 after the third partition of Poland to the Government Kovno in the Russian Empire. 1920 Latvia received the city in exchange for Palanga, which came to Lithuania.

Aknīstes novads
