Akodon

The South American field mice or South American grass mice ( Akodon ) are a very species-rich genus of Neuweltmäusen whose representatives are ubiquitous in South America and are among the most common mammals of the continent.

These mice have a head-body length of 8-14 inches, added 5 to 10 cm tail. You are wühlmausartig of shape, have a stocky body and short legs. The soft fur is oberseits gray or brown above, gray or white.

Most species live in the grasslands of the pampas and in low and middle altitudes of the Andes. Only a few species are native to the tropical rain forest. The food is mainly vegetable, but all types will also take insects as complementary foods.

The Azara grass mouse as a very common type in the east of South America is particularly well researched. Their gestation period is 22 days and twice a year she gives birth. The average litter size is 3.5. The life span is only seven to twelve months, with the fall -born mice live significantly longer than those that come in the spring to the world. Like other types also, the Azara grass mouse transmit the Hanta virus and is considered a grain pest.
