Aku people

The Aku are an ethnic group in the African nation of Gambia.

The Aku are descendants of freed slaves who were first settled in the 19th century in Sierra Leone. Later, when Freetown was heavily populated in Sierra Leone, one freed slaves went on to also in Bathurst (old name of the present capital Banjul), to settle in The Gambia. This ethnic group, which is found only in the Gambia, called Aku.

The Aku represent about one percent of the population of the Gambia and are mostly followers of the Christian faith.

Language

As a language, a dialect of Creole Krio is spoken, called Aku or Krio Gambian.
