Akuapim South Municipal District

The Akuapim South District (also: Akuapem South or South Akapim or Akwapim South ) is located in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Chief executive of the 362 km ² large district with 116 346 (2002) inhabitants, Andrew Y. Nyarko - Adu. District capital is Nsawam, which is only 23 km north- west of Accra, located on the road to Kumasi.

Population and geography

The total population lives mostly in rural villages. Only in the towns of Nsawam ( population: 29 986 ), Adoagyiri ( population: 13,058 ) and Aburi ( population: 10,071 ) is home to more than 5,000 inhabitants. The village of Aburi is due to the Botanical Garden, which has been created here is a major tourist destination and is internationally recognized.

In the district have traditionally been the dominions of the Chief's ( chiefs ) in Nsawam area in the range between Djankoma, Adamukrom, Oparekrom and Kojokrom. Furthermore, the area Adoagyiri in the range between Amoakrom, Owuraku, Akwamu, Kkfisah, Okanta, Som and Oblegima. Finally, there is the area in the field Sakyikrom Asante, Kwaku and Fankyeneko.

The main drainage system in the district is the Densu, which rises in the mountains Atiwa in the sewing of Kibi. The area of the district is covered 90 percent of semi- moist rainforest. The other 10 percent are covered with grassland.

In the village Adamorobe has the Adamorobe sign language a unique sign language developed. Some of the Deaf in Adamorobe have information on the person and the origin tattooed on the inside of an arm in the event that they need help and not being able to communicate.

The Akuapim South District consists of a constituency. In the constituency Aburi - Nsawam Magnus Opare - Asamoah from the party New Patriotic Party (NPP ) has been selected as a direct candidate in the Ghanaian parliament.
