Akurey

Akurey is a small uninhabited island in the west of Iceland. It is part of the municipality Reykjavíkurborg, however, belong to any of the ten districts of Reykjavík, but for Gräni Trefillinn ( green belt, hinterland of Reykjavík ).

Geography

Akurey located 1100 meters north of the Old Port of Reykjavík ( Reykjavíkurhöfn ) in the westernmost municipality Vesturbær, separated by the Hólmasund, and 1700 meters west of the island Engey in Kollafjörður, separated by the Engeyjarsund. Although the island belongs to the municipality of Reykjavíkurborg, but to none of the 10 municipalities of Reykjavík.

The island is 780 meters long and in the north to 200 meters wide. Their surface area is 11.5 hectares.

History

The uninhabited island belonged in 1379 to Víkurkirkja, a former church in Reykjavík, and was used for cultivation. The Icelandic bailiff Skúli Magnússon lost a legal dispute over the ownership of the island, he fought out on behalf of the church with a farmer. 1854 a landmark was built on the island. 1969 bought by the city of Reykjavík, the island, from 1978 it belonged to the municipality.
