Akureyri Art Museum

The Akureyri Art Museum (Icelandic á Akureyri Listafnið ) is the largest art museum in Iceland outside of the catchment area of Reykjavík.

History and Geography

The Akureyri Art Museum was established in 1993 in a former dairy operated until 1980, which is a good example of Icelandic architecture in the Bauhaus style. The design for the building comes from the Icelandic architects Ðórir Baldvinsson, who worked for the Icelandic Genossenschaftsverband Samband íslenskra samvinnufélaga. It is in the center of the second largest city in Iceland in the north of the country.

Exhibition work

In Akureyri Art Museum, among others, the famous Icelandic artist Erro, Kjarval and Louisa Matthíasdóttir have exhibited alongside foreign artists such as the American Spencer Tunick and the Israeli video artist Guy Ben -Ner. Furthermore, so far, an exhibition of the French photographer Henri Cartier -Bresson was shown.

In 2006, the Museum was the site of the first award ceremony of Icelandic Visual Arts Awards.
