Akyaka (Kars)

Akyaka (formerly Kızılçakçak, Kurdish Şûrêgel ) is a town and a district of Kars Province in north-eastern Turkey. Akyaka is situated in the east of the province, bordering Armenia. The border crossing with Armenia closed since the outbreak of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan in 1993. The district has 12,139 inhabitants Akyaka, the city of 2,219 (as of 2011 ).

Akyaka was called until 1961 Kızılçakçak and was a part of the district APARCAY. Since 1988, Akyaka is a separate county.

Near the place there was the Armenian Holy Saviour Monastery of Jerasgawors that has fallen victim to the damming of the river.
