Akyaka ( ancient name Idyma ) is a town in the district of the Turkish province of Muğla Ula. The city lies on the Gulf of Gokova, 84 kilometers east of Bodrum, 18 km south from the provincial capital and 24 km north of Muğla Marmaris.

Akyaka was founded as a Carian city and BC mentioned in tax lists of the Athenian confederacy, 453 for the first time.

Rock tombs from this period are located at the entrance to the village, they were 1974/75 found during the construction of a new link road. In the Roman period in the province of Asia lying to Idyma spread to the west. When the channel is working a Roman family grave was discovered, its content is kept in the museum of Muğla and can be visited.

In the 1930s began with the draining of the marshes in the bay of Gokova and brought malaria under control.

After the construction of the road Muğla - Marmaris (1970 ) developed the village of Akyaka, which consisted of only a few houses and belonged to Kozluköyü to a resort area and tourist center. Akyaka is characterized by a kind of pseudo- Seljuk - Ottoman architecture with typical wooden elements that is unique in Turkey. The architect Nail Çakırhan got for his designs and finishes in 1983, the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.

The beach of Akyaka is about 500 meters long and 10-20 meters wide. It is by standing high groundwater always slightly moist in summer, strong and cool. With larger amounts of cool spring water from the surrounding mountains and the water temperature is cooler than neighboring resorts in this area of the Gulf of Gokova in the summer and the air temperature rises by the cool water on a hot day a little less as in the environment.

Akyaka is mainly visited by Turkish holidaymakers. The typical for Turkey tourists flows from Western Europe and Russia reach only to a small extent to Akyaka. In addition to an extensive camping and holiday home area on the outskirts there are in Akyaka especially smaller hotels and apartment buildings. Next to the beach there is a jetty, there are still many fishing boats as well as some tourist boats are on the. Beyond the pier there are berths for private yachts and smaller private leisure boats.
