Al-‘Abbas ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib

Al - ʿ Abbās ibn ʿ Abd al - Muttalib (Arabic العباس بن عبد المطلب, DMG al - ʿ Abbās bin ʿ Abd al - Muttalib; * to 565 in Mecca, † 653 in Medina ) was a paternal uncle and companion of the Prophet Muhammad, the prophet of the Islamic religion.

He held in his family's hereditary honorary positions at the Kaaba. When Muhammad proclaimed Islam, he turned to the new doctrine for the time being not to. It was not until after the Battle of Badr 624 he took as a prisoner in Medina to Islam. He is considered the progenitor of the Abbasids. His son was ʿ Abd Allāh ibn ʿ Abbās, one of the oldest exegetes of the Qur'an.
