Al Fairweather

Alastair " Al " Fairweather ( born June 12, 1927 in Edinburgh, † 21 June 1993 ) was a British jazz trumpeter and bandleader.

Life and work

Al Fairweather attended the Royal High School in Edinburgh and Edinburgh College of Art and made ​​his military service with the National Service in Egypt from. After his return to Scotland, and his retirement from the army in 1949 Fairweather founded with his school friend Sandy Brown a band; 1953 attracted the two musicians with her band, which includes Stan Greig belonged, to the south and eventually appeared in London. For the label Esquire Records they took as Fairweather -Brown All Stars, a number of albums, as Mc Jazz, Dr McJazz or The Incredible McJazz. The band was one of the most successful formations of the English mainstream jazz and was from 1956 to 1964, to Sandy Brown left the band. Fairweather was then a member of the Cy Laurie Jazz Band. Its powerful game was reminiscent of Louis Armstrong. From 1966 to 1968 he worked with clarinetist Acker Bilk. He then began a second career as a music teacher in Harrow, near London; in addition, he worked as a soloist and arranger for Stan Greig's London Jazz Big Band and came back in 1987 to Edinburgh, where he played until his death with the band Groove Juice Special. He also appeared regularly at the Edinburgh Jazz Festival.
