Al Lucas (musician)

Albert B. " Al " Lucas ( born November 16, 1916 in Windsor, Ontario; † July 19, 1983 in New York City ) was a Canadian jazz bassist of the swing.

Life and work

Al Lucas ' mother was a concert pianist; by her he had lessons as a child of twelve years, he moved to bass and tuba. Sixteen year moved Lucas to New York City, where he played at Kaiser Marshall, then at Ace Harris Sunset Royal Orchestra from 1933 to 1942. He worked at Hot Lips Page, Coleman Hawkins and Eddie Heywood 1944/45, before he had received from a member of the trio Mary Lou Williams ( Zodiac Suite 1945) and then the orchestra of Duke Ellington (1945 /46) was, with whom he performed in 1956. He also acted otherwise with on numerous recordings, such as James P. Johnson, JJ Johnson, Ben Webster, Erroll Garner and Eddie South. From 1947 to 1953 he was with Illinois Jacquet on tour, in 1954-56, he played again with Heywood. In 1957, he worked in Cootie Williams' Savoy Ballroom Orchestra 1958 with the 7th Ave. Stompers with Emmett Berry, Vic Dickenson, Joe Wilder and Buster Bailey. He also took on with Ruby Braff, Charlie Byrd and Teddy Wilson, Impeccable in its trio album The Mr. Wilson he was involved. Later, Lucas worked mainly as a studio musician and only appeared occasionally in jazz environment on. So he worked with Leo Parker's 1961 album Rollin 'with Leo and Sonny Stitt's 1963 album Salt & Pepper.
