Al-Mansur Billah

Abu Tahir Ismail al - Mansur bi- ' llah (Arabic أبو طاهر إسماعيل المنصور بالله, DMG Abu Tahir ʾ Ismā ʿ al - Mansur bi- īl ' llāh; * 913 in Raqqada, † March 19 953 ) was 946-953 in Ifriqiya the third Caliph of the Fatimids.

Abu Tahir Ismail was born in 913 in Kairouan Raqqada and took over 946 the reign of his father Abu al -Qasim al - Qaim (reigned 934-946 ). The Fatimid empire was located by the revolt of Abu Yazid ( 943-947 ) then in a serious crisis. Only after the unity of the insurgents had disintegrated, Ismail succeeded with the help of the Berber Zirids to suppress the revolt. After the victory over Abu Yazid Ismail took the nickname " al - Mansur ". As a sign of his triumph, he built the new residence al - Mansuriya at Kairouan.

By the end of his reign Ismail al - Mansur was concerned with the reorganization of the Fatimid Empire. So he took again the fights with the Umayyads of Córdoba in Morocco (see: Caliphate of Córdoba). Moreover, Sicily was again subjected to and the raids against Italy will be resumed ( see also Islam in Italy). In Sicily, the rule of the Fatimids was strengthened by the establishment of the Kalbite as emirs. Ismail al - Mansur died after a serious illness already on 19 March 953, leaving the kingdom to his son Abu Tamim al - Muizz († 975 ).
