Al-Mu'tamid

Abu l - Abbas Ahmad al - Mu'tamid (Arabic أبو العباس أحمد المعتمد, DMG Abū ʿ Abbās Aḥmad al - l -Mu ʿ tamid; * 842/844; † October 15 892 ) was the fifteenth Abbasid Caliph ( 870-892 ).

Al - Mu'tamid was the youngest son of al - Mutawakkil ( 847-861 ). After his assassination by the Turkish Garden his predecessors had been overthrown in Samarra in each case after a short time. As a result, the resulting factual incapacity of the central government of the existence of the Caliphate was increasingly threatened. So did the Tulunids in Egypt, one of the richest provinces, de facto independent. Also, the revolt of the Zanj shook southern Iraq ( 869-883 ). From the latter, the caliphs were therefore greatly affected, since large estates of the Abbasids were in southern Iraq, about the could no longer be available.

With the acquisition of the Caliph al - Mu'tamid Office by the dissolution of the Caliphate was initially stopped. The government initiated since 875 his brother al - Muwaffaq. It was possible to control the Turkish Garden and the provinces better and quell the slave uprising in southern Iraq to 883. 892 was able to even the caliph residence of Samarra be moved to Baghdad, without, however, the influence of the Turkish troops changed something.

However, the independence of the Tulunids in Egypt had to be recognized in fact. Even under the rule of the Saffarids and Samanids eastern Iran and Transoxiana, the influence of the Caliph was only slight.

The Caliph came in the second half of the 9th century, increasingly in financial straits, since the maintenance of the Turkish troops devoured more than 50 % of government revenues. Therefore, the Turkish officers were increasingly invested with lands into provinces ( IQTA ). Although this practice reduced the cash requirements of the first caliph, but withdrew this increasingly control over the provinces.

After the death of the regent al - Muwaffaq ( 891 ) were taken over the offices of his son Abu l - Abbas Ahmad. This forced al - Mu'tamid to determine him as his heir to the throne and took over as al - Mu'tadid ( 892-902 ), the Caliphate.
