Al-Mustansir (Baghdad)

Al- Mustansir (Arabic أبو جعفر المنصور بن محمد الظاهر المسنتصر بالله, DMG Abū ʿ far al - Mansur Ǧa b Muhammad az- Zahir al - Mustansir bi- ' llāh; . * 1192, † December 5, 1242 ) was from 1226 to 1242 the thirty-sixth Abbasid Caliph.

Abu Jafar al - Mansur ibn Muhammad az- Zahir al - Mustansir bi- ' llah, succeeded his father, az- Zahir on ( 1225-1226 ). He was an active, pious and just ruler. So he founded in 1234 in Baghdad named after him theological college ( the Mustansiriyya University), in which the four Sunni legal schools ( madhhab ) were taught.

Politically, the situation of the Caliphate was first coined in Iran by the Khwarazmian threat of Sultan Jalal al -Din and after his death ( 1231 ) by the expansion of the Mongols. Although al - Mustansir tried to maintain good relations with the Ayyubids in Egypt and the Rum Seljuks in Anatolia, but came no active alliance against the Mongols.

After the Mongols had already conquered parts of northern Iraq, they attacked in 1237 in Baghdad, but were repelled by the Abbasids. 1238 suffered the army of al - Mustansirs a heavy defeat against the Mongols, but again withdrew because of the strong fortifications of Baghdad to Iran. In the last years of his reign al - Mustansir was preoccupied with the reinforcement of the army and fixing his capital.

After the death of al - Mustansirs on December 5, 1242 al - Mustasim ( 1242-1258 ) was the last Abbasid caliph in Baghdad.
