Al-Sadiq al-Mahdi

Imam Sayyid Sadiq al -Mahdi (Arabic الصادق المهدي, DMG aṣ - Sadiq al-Mahdi ), also known as Sadiq Abd ar -Rahman / صادق عبد الرحمن / Sadiq ʿ Abdu r- Rahman known, ( born December 25, 1935 in Omdurman, Sudan ) was Prime Minister of Sudan.

Sadiq is a great grandson of Muhammad Ahmad, known as the Mahdi, and a brother of Hasan at- Turabi. He is since 1964 the chairman of the UMMA Party, as prime minister, he worked in a first term of 27 July 1966 to 18 May 1967. His second term began on May 6, 1986, on a guided Umar Hasan Ahmad al -Bashir military coup he was deposed on 30 June 1989 in office. Sadiq al -Mahdi was under house arrest until his 1996 escape to Eritrea succeeded. He returned in November 2000 and was last re-elected in February 2009 as chairman of his opposition UMMA party.

He is the uncle of actor Alexander Siddig.

He was one of the 138 signatories of the open letter A Common Word between Us and You (English A Common Word Between Us and You), the personalities of Islam to "leaders of Christian churches everywhere" (English " Leaders of Christian Churches, everywhere ... " ) submitted (13 October 2007).
