Al Swift

Byron Allan " Al " Swift ( born September 12, 1935 in Tacoma, Washington ) is a former American politician. Between 1979 and 1995 he represented the State of Washington in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Al Swift attended the common schools, including Lincoln High School in Tacoma. Then he studied until 1955 at Whitman College in Walla Walla and then to 1957 at Central Washington University in Ellensburg. In the following years he worked for various radio stations in the state of Washington as a radio announcer. At the transmitter KVOS TV he was department head. For his activities there, he was awarded the Emmy.

Politically, Swift joined the Democratic Party. Between 1965 and 1969 he worked on the staff of Congressman Lloyd Meeds. In the city of Bellingham Swift has held several local offices. In the congressional elections of 1978 he was in the second electoral district of his state in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Meeds on January 3, 1979. After seven elections he could pass in Congress until January 3, 1995 eight contiguous legislatures. He was a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee and headed the sub- committee dealing with Gefahrguttranporten. Swift was also chairman of the subcommittee on elections within the Congress government ( Subcommittee on Elections of the House Administration Committee).

In 1994, Al Swift gave up another run for the House of Representatives. Today he is on the board of the political strategy firm Colling, Swift & Hynes. He is married and has two grown daughters and lives in Alexandria ( Virginia).
