Alabama Crimson Tide

The University of Alabama has 19 different sports teams. Both male and female teams will be as Crimson Tide called. The Crimson Tide take on the NCAA Division I participate as a member of the Southeastern Conference in the Western Division.

The biggest rival of the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Auburn University Tigers and the Volunteers of the University of Tennessee. The rivalry with Auburn is especially strong because both teams in almost every sport come together every year. According to Sports Illustrated and ESPN is the rivalry between the football teams of the Auburn Tigers and the Crimson Tide, the so-called Iron Bowl, the second largest after the baseball rivalry between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees.

Other major rivals are the Mississippi State Bulldogs, Louisiana State Tigers, Ole Miss Rebels and the Georgia Bulldogs.

Football

The law student at the University of Alabama William G. Little learned at school in Andover, Massachusetts football to play and started at the beginning of 1892 to teach students at the University of Alabama football. Later in the year, the university formed an official team of 19 players, with Little as captain and EB Beaumont as head coach. Since then, the football department of the Alabama Crimson Tide has won 22 SEC titles and 15 national championships. Together with the 15 reported by the University of Alabama NCAA championships called the master of the seasons 1945, 1966, 1967 and 1977. These championships are not claimed by the university.

The team also participated in 56 Bowls in part, beginning with the Rose Bowl in 1926 to the Rose Bowl in 2010. In these 56 games Alabama has a statistic of 32-21-3, so 32 wins, with 21 defeats and three draws. Since 1913, 97 players the Crimson Tide All-Americans were the first team in the Conference.

The finale of the 2012 season took place in Miami on January 9, 2013. In the BCS National Championship Game, the Alabama Crimson Tide defeated in the eternal battle the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame 42-14. They are thus the so-called Back to Back National Champions after the Final of the 2011 season, the LSU Tigers were defeated 21-0.

Men's Basketball

The basketball program of the men was almost overshadowed the whole period of existence of the football team. However, the program has established itself within several years, until it was in 2002 in the national ranking at # 1. The University of Alabama is now a regular title contender, both in the Conference, as well as nationally, this was the case already in the 1980s under coach Wimp Sanderson. Under the current head coach and former point guard Mark Gottfried, the team the Crimson Tide improved to such an extent that it now to the " Elite Eight " of the NCAA heard within six consecutive years.

In 2005, the basketball team suffered a slight setback as it in the first round of the playoffs against underdog Milwaukee lost. Milwaukee was led by Bruce Pearl, the current head coach of Tennessee.

Baseball

The baseball team the Crimson Tide was five times in the NCAA College World Series (1950, 1983, 1996, 1997, 1999). Home games are played at Sewell -Thomas Stadium.
