Alain Carpentier

Alain Carpentier ( born August 11, 1933, Toulouse ) is a French heart surgeon. He works in the department of cardiovascular surgery and organ transplantation at the Hôpital Européen Georges- Pompidou in Paris.

Biography

Carpentier was a professor at the University Pierre and Marie Curie in Paris and at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He is the founder and director of the Laboratory for heart transplants and prostheses at the University Pierre and Marie Curie.

In 1998 he received the Grand Prize of the Fondation pour la recherche médicale for his pioneering research in cardiac surgery.

In December 2000 he was admitted as a member in the Department of Human Biology and Medical Sciences of the Academy of Sciences.

In 2007 he received the Albert Lasker Award for Clinical Medical Research ..

Its main features are:

Artificial heart project

Since 1988, Carpentier is involved in a project to develop an artificial heart. In 1993 he founded to act together with the Jean -Luc Lagardère, the former Director General of the Matra Group, the company Carmat ( Carpentier -Matra ).

End of October 2008, a number of investors involved with investing in the project:

  • EADS, the parent company of Matra, who has already spent 15 million euros for the company, will invest an additional € 2 million;
  • The Fund invests 33 million euros Oseo;
  • Carpentier himself participates with 250,000 euros from his private fortune.

On December 18, 2013 this artificial heart was used for the first time a patient. The operation led a team led by Christian Latrémouille by.
