Alain Gagnon

Alain Gagnon ( May 22nd, 1938 in Trois-Pistoles/Québec ) is a Canadian composer and music educator.

Gagnon learned to play the piano self-taught before he was 1951-1958 piano student of Father Philippe -Antoine Lavoie at Rimouski Seminary. From 1960 he took organ lessons with Henri Gagnon at the Conservatoire de Musique du Québec and composition lessons with Roger Matton at Laval University.

In the years 1964 and 1965 he studied with Jocelyne Binet. In 1965 he was awarded a Prix d'Europe, a grant from the Canada Council and a grant from the Ministry of Education of Quebec and went to Paris where he studied at the École César - Franck Henri Dutilleux at the Ecole Normale de Musique and with Olivier Alain. 1966 was followed by brief studies at the Institut de Sonology in Utrecht and at André- François Marescotti at the Geneva Conservatory. Since 1967 he has taught music theory, analysis and composition at Laval University.
