Alain Vanzo

Alain Vanzo ( born April 2, 1928 in Monte Carlo, † January 27, 2002 in Paris) was a French opera singer ( tenor) and composer.

Vanzo was born to an Italian father. He was self-taught and sang in the church choir at a young age. He has also taught himself to play the piano. In 1954 Vanzo in a singing competition at Cannes in part, he won: That was the starting point for his career as a lyric tenor.

Vanzo was hired by the Grand Opéra in Paris. There he sang from 1954 to 1957 first rather minor roles. In 1957 he succeeded to the role of " Edgardo " in Lucia di Lammermoor Gaetano Donizetti's breakthrough. Vanzo became one of France's leading tenors. In the following years he has sung at all major opera houses around the world. Undisputed starring role Vanzos was the " nadir " in Georges Bizet's Les perles de pêcheurs. Vanzos singing career lasted until the late 1980s.

Besides as a singer himself Vanzo did show as a composer. He wrote some songs and two major works:

  • The operetta Pecheur d' Etoile ( premiered in 1972 in Lille)
  • The lyrical drama Les Chouans ( premiered in 1982 in Avignon )

Vanzo died in 2002 at the age of 73 years.
