Alajeró, Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Alajeró is one of the six municipalities of the Canary Island of La Gomera. The place Alajeró, which also houses the headquarters is located high in the mountains above the village of Playa Santiago, which is partly owned by the municipality and Alajeró to San Sebastian de la Gomera.

History

The community Alajeró is located in part of the historic Ureinwohnergebiete Hipalán and Orone.

The foundation of the larger resort of Playa Santiago is due to Fischer, who settled there because of the good fishing opportunities and there erected fish canneries, as well as buildings for the repair of ships.

Economy

In winter, the community is often in the clouds fog. This made the inhabitants earlier exploited by cereals and legumes by sowing with the first rains in November, which were then harvested in May. Meanwhile, the commercial agriculture was virtually abandoned. Since an agricultural crisis in the 1960s and 1970s put a country escape, so that the smaller villages partially or totally abandoned and much of the land lies fallow. The fish factory of Playa Santiago had to be closed.

A little prosperity brings today the moderate tourism, thanks to the small island airport opened in 1999.
