Alamara Nhassé

Alamara Nhassé (* 1957) was from 2001 to 2002 Prime Minister of Guinea- Bissau.

Political career

Nhassé is agriculturist and was trained in Cuba and the Soviet Union.

It belongs to the Partido para a Renovação Social ( PRS) of the President Kumba IALA, in office from 2000 to 2003. First Nhassé was Minister of Agriculture. In the reign of Faustino Imbali he took over after the dismissal of Artur Sanhá on August 29, 2001, the Office of the Minister of the Interior. After the dismissal Imbalis by the President, he took on 9 December 2001, the Office of the Prime Minister. On 15 January 2002, a Congress of the PRS elected him with 339 of 567 votes to the president of the party. A new government crisis ended his tenure and led to the dissolution of Parliament. On 17 November 2002, Mário Pires, also PRS, appointed by the President as the new head of government. On 25 November 2002 Nhassé resigned as party chairman.

In June 2005, he supported the candidacy João Bernardo Vieira in the presidential elections. After his election victory Nhassé called in September 2005 for the resignation of the government of Carlos Gomes Júnior, who later by the departure of 14 of the 45 members of his party, PAIGC lost his parliamentary base a few weeks. Since the appointment of Aristides Gomes as Prime Minister by the President Vieira in early November 2005, the PRS is represented by five ministers in the government.
