Alameda County, California
Alameda County is a county located in the U.S. state of California, located in the San Francisco Bay Area. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Oakland.
Geography
The county covers an area of 2,127 square kilometers. Of these, 1,910 square kilometers of land and 216 square kilometers of water.
History
The County was created from parts of Contra Costa County and Santa Clara County on March 25, 1853.
The term " alameda " means a place to grow poplar trees in the avenues. The name itself was originally given to El Arroyo de la Alameda ( Alameda Creek ). The willows and sycamores on the banks of the river reminded the explorers avenues.
The county seat at the time, was initially located in Alvarado and was later moved to San Leandro (1856 ). A few years later the county seat moved to Brooklyn ( 1872-1875 ). Brooklyn is now part of Oakland where there is since 1873 /75 County Seat.

According to the census of 2000, there were 1,443,741 people in Alameda County. There were 523 366 households and 339 141 families. The population density was 756 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 48.79 % White, 14.93 % African American, 0.63 % Native American, 20.45 % Asian, 0.63 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 8.94 % from other races groups; 5.63% were descended from two or more races. 18.97 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 523 366 households out of which 32.60 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 47.00 % were married couples living together, 13.00 % had a female householder with no husband. 35.20 % were non-families. 26.00% of all households and 7.30 % had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.31 persons.
Based on the county the population was spread out with 24.60 % under the age of 18, 9.60 % from 18 to 24, 33.90 % from 25 to 44 years, 21.70% between 45 and 64 years and 10.20% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 96.60 males, 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.00 males.
The median income for a household was $ 55,946, and the median income for a family was $ 65,857. Males have a median income of $ 47,425, women $ 36,921. The per capita income was $ 26,680. 11.00% percent of the population and 7.70 % of families are below the poverty line. 13.50% of those under age 18 and 8.10% were 65 years or older.
