Alameda County, California

Alameda County is a county located in the U.S. state of California, located in the San Francisco Bay Area. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Oakland.

Geography

The county covers an area of ​​2,127 square kilometers. Of these, 1,910 square kilometers of land and 216 square kilometers of water.

History

The County was created from parts of Contra Costa County and Santa Clara County on March 25, 1853.

The term " alameda " means a place to grow poplar trees in the avenues. The name itself was originally given to El Arroyo de la Alameda ( Alameda Creek ). The willows and sycamores on the banks of the river reminded the explorers avenues.

The county seat at the time, was initially located in Alvarado and was later moved to San Leandro (1856 ). A few years later the county seat moved to Brooklyn ( 1872-1875 ). Brooklyn is now part of Oakland where there is since 1873 /75 County Seat.
