Alan Bowman

Alan Keir Bowman FBA ( born 1944 in Manchester ) is a British historian.

Alan K. Bowman attended the Manchester Grammar School (1955-1962) and Queen's College (1962-1966) in Oxford. At Queen's College, he received his bachelor's degree in Literae Humaniores ( studying with classical content, ancient history and philosophy). At the University of Toronto (1966-1969), the master and the Ph.D. was Bowman was an Assistant Professor of Classics at Rutgers University ( 1970-1972 ). From 1972 to 1977 he was a lecturer in Ancient History at the University of Manchester, 1977-2002 University Lecturer in Ancient History at the University of Oxford. From 2002 to 2010, Bowman Camden Professor of Ancient History at Oxford and a Fellow of Brasenose College. In 1994 he became a Fellow of the British Academy. He is also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. Since October 2011, Bowman is Director ( Principal ) of Brasenose College.

His research focuses on the social and economic history of the Roman Empire, Roman Egypt and the fort Vindolanda. He worked for the British Museum the significant finds of Roman writing tablets from the fort. Bowman is one of the editors of the prestigious Hand book The Cambridge Ancient History.
