Alan Broadbent, MNZM ( born April 23, 1947 in Auckland, New Zealand) is a jazz pianist, arranger and composer.

Life and work

He studied piano and music theory in New Zealand, but came in 1966 in the United States to attend Berklee College of Music to study. He also was a student of Lennie Tristano. 1969 to 1972 he arranged and composed for Woody Herman (eg 1975 Variations on a scene), in which he played as a soloist. After this time, he settled in Los Angeles. In the seventies he worked both in the classical field ( where he also wrote classical chamber music) as well as a jazz musician: 1975 in the John Klemmer tape from 1979 in a trio with Bud Shank and as a sideman for Warne Marsh, Chet Baker and Gary Foster and companion of singer Irene Kral. In the eighties, his participation in Charlie Haden's Quartet West, which made him known to a wider audience began. In the 90 years he received for his arrangements with Natalie Cole and Shirley Horn two Grammies, also accompanied singers such as Kenny Rankin and Sheila Jordan and published with his trio recordings under his own name. In his jazz piano playing classical education is partly to be heard clearly. As a conductor, he also worked for Kerem Görsev ( Therapy ).
