Alan Burns

Allan Burns ( born May 18, 1935 in Baltimore, Maryland) is an American screenwriter and television producer. With James L. Brooks, he was the creator of various sitcoms, so of The Munsters, Mary Tyler Moore and its spin-off Rhoda.

Life

Burns grew up as the son of a Jewish family in Baltimore and studied at the University of Oregon. At the beginning he tried his hand as cartoonists. He had his start as a page at NBC and tried then as a draftsman for greeting cards. From there he came to television, where he worked first as a draftsman in Rocky and Bullwinkle. Together with Chris Hayward, he designed then The Munsters. Next, the sitcom He & She followed for which he won an Emmy. For Mini -Max, he was lead author.

Then, together with James L. Brooks, he began to work at Room 222. This was followed by Mary Tyler Moore and the spin-offs Rhoda and Lou Grant. For Mary Tyler Moore, he received a total of five Emmys. In 1979 he wrote the screenplay for the movie I love you - I love you - Je t'aime, for which he received an Academy Award nomination.
