Alan Civil

Alan Civil ( born June 13, 1929 † 19 March 1989) was a British horn player and music teacher.

Civil studied horn with Aubrey Brain, father of Dennis Brain.

After his studies, he first second horn player (next to the solo horn player Dennis Brain ) at the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Thomas Beecham. After the death of brain he was succeeded as principal horn.

In the sixties of the 20th century civil became one of the first non- German members of the Berlin Philharmonic. Then he had a job as principal horn in the BBC Orchestra.

In addition to his instrumental work, he was a lecturer at the Royal College of Music, gave master classes and was a teacher at Horn workshops.

Civil alone has recorded three different pictures of the horn concertos by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the " Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings " by Benjamin Britten with Robert Tear as a conductor. It is also known his recording of the Beatles play " For No One ," in which he presents a high obbligato solo.

Civil was known for his sense of humor. Among other things, his comment has been handed down, in which he felt that we had to sit his whole life on the edge of his chair, otherwise you can never blow horn.

1985 his achievements were awarded the Order of the British Empire.
