Alas Building

The Edificio Alas ( German: Alas - building) is a residential and office building in the district of San Nicolás of the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires.

Description

The Alas Building is 141 meters high and has 41 floors. The construction took four years. From the completion of 1950-1996, it was the tallest building in Buenos Aires, until it was surpassed by the Torre Le Parc. It is together with adjacent buildings on Avenida Leandro N. Alem, eg the Edificio Comega, an important part of the cityscape of Buenos Aires. In recent years it has been overshadowed by the construction of numerous high-rise buildings in Puerto Madero. On the list of the tallest buildings in the country, it is number 20 (as of 2009 ).

The building was commissioned by the former President Juan Perón in order. He also determined to build a bunker in the building in the event of a war or a coup. He used this bunker but three months later, either during the bombing of Plaza de Mayo on June 16, in 1955 during the Liberation Revolution ( Revolución Libertadora ).
