Alastair Fothergill

Alastair Fothergill (born 10 April 1960, and London ) is a British film director and television producer of nature film documentaries that has become known with high quality and spectacular shots.

Life

Fothergill attended the traditional private school Harrow School in London. He studied zoology at St Cuthbert 's Society at the University of Durham and turned while still a student, his first film, On the Okavango. His professional life began Fothergill 1983 at the BBC Natural History Unit, where he worked on nature documentaries like The Really Wild Show, Wildlife on One and David Attenborough's award-winning 12 -part documentary The Trials of Life ( The Trials of Life). At the age of 32 he was appointed in November 1992 as Head of the Department and produced, among other Attenborough's series Life in the Freezer (1992 ), which has been honored by the British Academy Film Awards. In Reefwatch he developed underwater remotes. He became internationally known with nature film series The Blue Planet (The Blue Planet ).

In June 1995, he resigned as head of department, in order to concentrate on his task until 2001 as producer of the series The Blue Planet. The eight -part series on the fauna of the seas showed spectacular underwater shots with a hitherto never seen quality and has been for many awards. In 2003, the movie Deep Blue, which was made up of the best scenes of the series and further footage followed.

This was followed by his work as a director and producer of the film Our earth and the TV series Planet Earth. Our Earth was shot at more than 200 locations in 26 countries around the world. 40 camera teams produced 1000 hours of footage and made solely at 250 days aerial photographs. This film ( Earth) also received as part of the Cinema for Peace Gala Night on 11 February 2008 the Clean Energy Award from BMW.

Fothergill was appointed president by the South Georgia Heritage Trust in 2006.

The he produced television documentary Nature's great events was broadcast in 2009.
