Alatna River

The Alatna arises as a small trickle from the Geadake Lake in the Endicott Mountains in the heart of the Brooks Range in Gates -of -the- Arctic National Park, about 100 km north of the Arctic Circle. It flows in a southeasterly direction and empties in Allakaket the Arctic Circle in the Koyukuk River.

The upper 133 km of the Alatna have the status of worth protecting National Wild and Scenic Rivers within the meaning of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. This stretch of river is also called " Alatna Wild River " and managed by the National Park Service.

The Circle Lake from the calmly flowing Alatna is a popular river for canoeists. The Circle Lake and Lake Takahula are accessible by seaplane. Booted out is usually in Allakaket, 135 km downstream of the Circle Lake and 120 km downstream of the Takahula Lakes.
