The Alaverdi Monastery (Georgian: ალავერდი, ალავერდის მონასტერი ) is an Eastern Orthodox monastery in the Kakheti region of Georgia. It is located in eastern Georgia, near the village of the same name, 25 kilometers from the city Akhmeta. The monastery was founded in the 4th century by Ioseb Alawerdeli ( Ioseb of Alaverdi ). In the 11th century a new and larger church of the monastery of Kwirike III was. ( King of Kakheti ) built. This building is today a main Church of Alaverdi Monastery and under the name " Alaverdi Cathedral " (Georgian: ალავერდის ტაძარი ) known. The cathedral is the third largest church in Georgia ( after Sameba Cathedral and the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral ) and with 50 meters, the second highest after the Sameba Cathedral.
