The Alay Mountains is a Central Asian mountains. The chain mountains with an altitude of up to 5544 m and a length of 400 kilometers stretching from west to east and partly forms the border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Western foothills are also in the area of Uzbekistan. The eastern mountainous part already part of the territory of China, where in Kashgar the Tarim Basin with the Takla Makan followed. The highest elevation of the eastern small Alai ( Kichik - Alai ) is the ( 5069 m) high spades Skobeliov.

From the northern Tianshan mountain range of the Alai is separated by the Ferghana Valley and the upper reaches of the Syr Darya river and its source Karadarja. To the south are the rivers of Kysylsu and Kashgar and traversed by wide Kysylsu Alai valley, the natural border with the Pamirmassiv. The Alai the south opposite, belonging to the Pamir mountain range with the Lenin Peak is the Transalai chain.

Mineral discoveries

The Alay Mountains, specifically the area around the glacier Dara -i - Pioz ( Darai - Pioz ), is a well-known locality for many minerals and their varieties. 128 minerals and 9 varieties are recorded: In total, there so far (2011 version). For 29 minerals Dara -i - Pioz is also considered a type locality, including one named after the glacier Darapiozit (English Darapiosite ), named after the neighboring country of Tajikistan Tadzhikit - (Ce), named after the neighboring mountain range Tienshanit and after Turkestan region named Turkestanit.
