Albalonga (grape)

Albalonga is a white grape variety. It is a new breed of a cross between Silvaner and Rieslaner that was bred in 1951 at the Bavarian State Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture in Veitshoechheim by Dr. Hans Breider. Accordingly, the variety is grown mainly in Swiss francs, as well as in the Rheinhessen and Pfalz there are smaller deposits. In 1988, the total area with Albalonga area in Germany 34 hectares, in 2001 only 13 acres. Since then, the stock is stable and in 2007 was at 14 acres.

The very fäuleanfällige Albalonga can provide strong reading in good years.

Synonyms: Würzburg B-51 -2-1

Ethnicity: Rieslaner x Silvaner

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. She is hairy weakly woolly.
  • The medium-sized leaves are hardly lobed and only very weakly sinuate ( see also the article sheet form). The petiole is U-shaped open. The blade is serrated blunt.
  • The drum-shaped bunch is medium, shouldered and dichtbeerig. The easy roll-shaped berries are small to medium in size and green-yellow color.

Albalonga matures almost 20 days after the Chasselas. Thus it applies as a medium- late maturing (a few days after the Müller -Thurgau ). The late bud break them to avoid late frost hazard. The powerfully built strain grew provides steady returns. The winter frost resistant is moderately good. Most weight and acid value (→ acid (wine) ) are comparatively high.

Albalonga is a variety of the noble vine (Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphrodite flowers and is thus self- fruiting. When the wine-growing economic disadvantage is avoided, no return delivered to have male plants grow.
