Albani-Friedhof

The Albani Cemetery in Göttingen is a historic cemetery where the burial sites of important personalities from culture and science are. Here also the great mathematician, astronomer, surveyor and physicist Carl Friedrich Gauss found its final resting.

Location and General Description

The cemetery is located on the southeastern edge of the old town Gottingen near the former city wall and bordered to the north Cheltenhampark. Access is via the Teichweg or Schildweg. The site has an area of about 12,600 square meters and has a large stock of old trees. To the northwest is the Schwänchenteich, the last remnant of the former from city wall belonging grave system.

History

The Albani cemetery was consecrated in 1783 and served the Albani and Nikolai church and the St. Crucius Hospital until 1881 as a burial ground, the last burial took place in 1902. During the Second World War, the entire area was severely damaged and many tombs and the surrounding walls were destroyed, and today only thirty tombs have been preserved, of which the oldest dates from the year 1816.
