Albany Choppers

The Albany Choppers were an American ice hockey franchise in the International Hockey League from Albany, New York. The venue of the chopper was the Knickerbocker Arena.

History

The Albany Choppers were established in 1990 as a franchise of the International Hockey League. Due to the high competition from other teams in the immediate vicinity, including the University team of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the tradition Team of the Adirondack Red Wings, and the newly founded Capital District Islanders of the expanding American Hockey League, came all the competing teams in financial trouble. Albany was hit as moderately successful team and without co-operation partners in the National Hockey League particularly hard by competition. The Games of the Albany Choppers were partially attended by fewer than 1000 people, so the matches lack the necessary funds could no longer be maintained, and had to be discontinued on February 14, 1991. The gap left by the chopper in Albany, in 1993, filled by the relocation of the Capital District Islanders from Troy to Albany and its renaming in Albany River Rats.
