Albany is a city and the county seat ( county seat ) of the Shackelford County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.
Geography
The city lies near the Countyzentrum, about 100 kilometers north of the geographic center of Texas, is located about 100 kilometers from Oklahoma to the north and has an area of 3.8 km ² without significant water surface.
History
The town was founded in 1874 and appointed zm the county seat on November 8, 1874. By County officials William Cruger the place wzrde after its former resident Albany ( Georgia) named. As of August 1875, the state sold the settlers in his possession locations in the place in which soon created a " General Store ". As Albany was on the route of the cattle drives to Dodge City, the place soon developed into a supply center for the overhauling drover. With the arrival of the Texas Central Railroad, which reached 1881 Albany, the place for loading center for bovine animals. 1883, the City Hall and the first school was built. Cattle and sheep were to the discovery of the nearby oil fields in 1926, the main economic activities of the city. Although from 1926 Albany became a supply center for the surrounding oil fields, cattle remained one of the main industries in the area.
Religion
In Albany, there are 12 different churches from 9 different denominations. Among the belonging to a denomination churches the Baptist church is the most represented with four churches ( as of 2004).
Demography
According to the census of 2000, there were 192 people. The population density was 504.6 people per square kilometer. There were 880 housing units at an average 231.1 per square kilometer. The population consisted of 93.13 % White, 0.68 % African American, 0.47% Native American, 4.84 % reported from other races, and 0.88 % from two or more races. 8.07 % of the population to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The residents of Albany were distributed to 746 households out of which 33.1% were living in children under 18 years. 59.1 % married couples living together, 8.7 % had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7 % were non-families. 27.3% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 16.1 % of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size is 3.08.
The population was spread out with 27.0 % under the, 6.4% 18 - to 24 -year-old, 25.4 % 25 - to 44 -year-old, 23.0 % 45 - to 64 -year-old and 18.3 % under the age 65 years or more. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 86.9 males. For over 18 years accounted for 100 women, 83.2 men.
The median household income was $ 31,563, and the median family income reached the level of 40 592 U.S. dollars. The average income of men was 28 846 U.S. dollars, compared to 17,411 U.S. dollars for women. The per capita income in Albany reached 17 470 U.S. dollars. 9.2% of the population and 8.1% of families had affected an income below the poverty line, including 10.1 % of minors and 11.1 % of those age 65 or over.
