Development

The Albatros D.II differed only slightly from its predecessor Albatros DI: N-shaped, outwardly splayed center braces instead of the central Verstrebungsturms now wore the top wing, what the amount absenkte and so the pilot allowed a significantly better view up front. This reduction also allowed that used in the DI and D-II first aerodynamically unfavorable wind Hoff - side cooler from November to replace Teeves & Brown - wing radiator, so the modified aircraft were designated from time to time as D.IIa. Otherwise, the design remained unchanged, so that production could continue without interruption.

200 aircraft were manufactured by Albatros and an additional 75 licenses from the LVG. They appeared from October 1916 to the front and were delivered to Jasta 2, and the newly formed Jasta 11. In January 1917, already 214 D.II were in front. At the same time Oeffag made also in License 20 Albatros D.II than 53 series for the kuk Aviation troops. Oeffag used to the 185 hp Austro-Daimler engine.

Use

Use generally

The Albatros D.II proven in the composite of the fighter squadrons newly formed, where they gradually the remaining Fokker D.II and Halberstadt replaced D- types along with the DI. Like its predecessor DI ordered the D.II two mounted above the engine LMG 08/ 15, and thus a Allied aircraft superior firepower. The improvements made over the DI, however, were bought with some restrictions: The flight duration was reduced by about 20 minutes at 1:30, the rate of climb decreased, the D.II took about 50 seconds longer to reach to 1,000 m altitude.

The stable and manoeuvrable aircraft contributed greatly to the fact that the Allies lost their air superiority on the Western Front.
