History
In 1120 Queen was D.Teresa the area to Gonçalo Eriz. One condition was the preservation of the local hostel ( Portuguese: Albergaria ) for the poor and sick. The resulting Caminho Português, a Way of St. James, was here. As Albergaria- a-Velha the place was first officially mentioned in 1117. Because the Crown had no jurisdiction over the territory received Albergaria- a-Velha no official city status ( Foral ).
In the course of the Napoleonic wars in the Iberian peninsula in 1809 French troops marched under General Soult through the circle while it was looting and damage here.
In the course of administrative reform in 1835 Albergaria- a-Velha was an independent circuit ( concelho ) and Vila ( town ). The place took an industrially significant development since the connection of the village on the railroad 1908. During the 1950s, the well-known here in Portugal Alba racing cars were produced. A renewed burst of development experienced the place after the A1 motorway in the 1980s reached the place.
In April 2011, the site of the city ( Cidade ) was charged.
Culture and sights
Various religious buildings, historic public buildings, urban mansions and fountains are in Albergaria- a-Velha under monument protection. Also the histrorische center of the town is protected.
The floodplain of the Rio Vouga Pateira de Frossos offers peace and opportunity for nature observation. In addition, are applied to the actual Vouga various green parks, sometimes equipped with sports facilities or picnic areas.

Economy
The water-rich landscape and fertile soil made from Albergaria a productive agricultural area, in particular the livestock industry played a role and plays. However, the biggest employers are the medium-sized companies in the manufacturing sector, in particular the metal processing industry, textile and wood processing companies. The aluminum works Fábricas Metalúrgicas Alba were in the 1950s, also a well known manufacturer of the car Alba. A majority of the companies are located in the local industrial area ( Zona Industrial ).
Traffic
The place is connected with its railway station of the railway line Linha do Vouga to the railway network in the country, and lies with its own junction on the A1 motorway. Albergaria- a-Velha is also integrated into the national bus network of speech Expressos.
