Albert Azaryan

Albert Wagarschakowitsch Azaryan (Armenian Ալբերտ Ազարյան; born February 11, 1929 in Vanadzor ) is a former Armenian Turner, who raced in the 1950s for the Soviet Union and was in gymnastics rings of the best gymnasts of his day.

Azaryan won from 1952 to 1962 eleven Soviet league titles, eight of them on the rings. He was 1954 and 1958 World Champion on the rings and 1956 and 1960 Olympic champion in his specialist equipment. 1954, 1958 and 1960 respectively, he received the highest score of all apparatus finals for its rings exercise. His specialty was the cross slope with a quarter turn, which he showed in both directions. His superiority, he underlined nor the fact that he smiled on all motor parts, which he demonstrated opponents, judges and spectators that it easily fell these parts. In multiplayer battle he was not so successful because the ground he could not keep up with his Soviet teammates as Viktor Chukarin or Boris Schachlin particular.

After his career Azaryan was head of the gymnastics school in Yerevan and judges. His son Eduard Azaryan 1980 Olympic gold medalist with the team of the Soviet Union.
