Albert Becker (composer)

Albert Ernst Anton Becker ( born June 13, 1834 in Quedlinburg, † January 10, 1899 in Berlin) was a German composer of the Romantic period.

Life

In his youth Becker lived in Quedlinburg at the address width road 260.Albert Becker then studied from 1853 to 1856 with Siegfried Dehn composition in Berlin and entered 1854 into the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin.

In 1861 was awarded Beckers Symphony in G minor with a symphony competition of the Directorate of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna under 32 submitted works the second prize ( the first prize was awarded to Joachim Raff Symphony " An das Vaterland " ), but remained unsuccessful. Eduard Hanslick commented: "It lacks the Composition of originality of creative force and outspoken personality. A nobler the commons to averting direction, quite skilful use of artistic means and a clean up to the anxiety elaboration of the details form the laudable pages of this work. "His breakthrough to fame and later fame was with the Great Mass in b minor, a commissioned work by 1878 25th anniversary of the company founded and run by Carl Riedel choir ( Riedel- Verein) in Leipzig.

Becker was from 1884 professor and teacher of composition at the Academy of Arts and a member of its Senate. His most famous student was Jean Sibelius, he taught counterpoint from 1889 to 1890. Among his pupils was also home to the German composer Paul Graener.

1889 Becker became the successor of Rudolph von Hertzberg the line of the Royal Cathedral Choir in Berlin. In 1892 he refused the request of the Emperor, to compete Wilhelm Rust's successor as cantor in Leipzig.

Becker is the grandfather of the composer Günter Raphael.
