Albert C. Greene

Albert Collins Greene ( born April 15, 1792 in East Greenwich, Rhode Iceland, † January 8, 1863 in Providence, Rhode Iceland ) was an American politician of the Whig Party, who represented the state of Rhode Iceland in the U.S. Senate.

Life

After graduating from Kent Academy, a private school in his hometown of East Greenwich, Greene studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1812 and began practicing law in East Greenwich. He belonged in 1815 to the House of Representatives from Rhode Iceland, where he remained of ten years; while he served 1821-1825 as its Speaker. During this time he rose in the state militia to up to Major General. From 1825 to 1843 he was then the Attorney General of the State.

After one term in the Senate of Rhode Iceland 1843-1844 Greene was finally elected to the U.S. Senate, in which he moved from March 4, 1845. After six years in office, he was not re-erected as a candidate, with his party, the Whigs, was at this time in a state of disintegration. From 1851 to 1852 he was again a state senator in Rhode Iceland, before 1857 again belonged to the House of Representatives there. Following Greene himself withdrew into private life.
