Albert Günther

Albert Carl Ludwig God Help Günther ( born October 3, 1830 in Esslingen am Neckar, † February 1, 1914 in Hampton Wick, Middlesex ) was a German zoologist with a focus on ichthyology.

Life and work

Albert Günther was born in Esslingen am Neckar. He studied theology in Bonn and Berlin, and later medicine in Tübingen. He joined in his studies of the Tübingen Royal Society Roigel. From 1856 he worked as an ichthyologist at the Natural History Museum in London. In 1875 he became director of the Zoological Department of the Museum. He held until 1895 this post. In addition to fishing, Günther employed with reptiles and amphibians.

Günther married Roberta, the sister of William Carmichael McIntosh. His son Robert Gunther (1869-1940) was a historian of science.

Honors

Günther was a member ( "Fellow" ) elected in 1867 to the Royal Society, which honored him in 1878 with the Royal Medal. 1904 Linnean Medal of the Linnean Society of London awarded him.
