Albert II, Duke of Mecklenburg

Albrecht II, Duke of Mecklenburg (* 1318, † February 18, 1379 ) was from 1329 to 1348, Prince of Mecklenburg and 1348-1379 Duke of Mecklenburg.

Life

Albrecht II was the son of Prince Henry II of Mecklenburg and Anna of Saxe- Wittenberg, daughter of Duke Albrecht II of Saxe -Wittenberg. Since 1329 Albrecht first ruled independently under guardianship, from 1336. He introduced together with the Pomeranian Dukes Otto I and Barnim III. War against Brandenburg ( Brandenburg - Pomeranian War). He was raised from the Roman-German king and later emperor Charles IV with his brother John I to the Duke and thus into the Imperial Prince on July 8, 1348. In the division of the state from November 25, 1352 the lands Rostock and the ancestral homeland of Mecklenburg were attributed to him. In 1357 he acquired the rights of the Counts of Schwerin. DC Charles IV he initially supported the wrong Waldemar, but reconciled in 1350 with the Margrave Ludwig. Albrecht II closed on February 20, 1368 a treaty of alliance with the Wendish Hanse towns, as these have a general alliance reached with the Duchy.

He has worked with success for the reasoning of the public peace in northeastern Germany. Shortly before seienem death he left Ernst von Kirchberg make the Mecklenburg rhyming chronicle. Albrecht II was buried in the Doberan Minster.
