Albert III, Duke of Bavaria

Albrecht III. the Pious (* March 27, 1401 in Munich, † February 29, 1460 in Munich) from the house of Wittelsbach was Duke of Bavaria- Munich.

Life

Albrecht fought in 1422 in the Battle of Alling, in which he saved his father, Duke Ernst, life. As administrator of his father, he lived mainly in 1433-1435 münchnerischen part of the Straubinger Ländchen. Duke Ernst Albrecht saw in relation to the Augsburg Bader daughter Agnes Bernauer a threat to the succession. He let Agnes Bernauer arrest and drown on October 12, 1435 in Straubing on the Danube, while Albrecht with his relatives Heinrich XVI. was on the hunt. Together with Louis VII of Bavaria -Ingolstadt was planning military action against Albrecht then his father.

After reconciliation with his father Albrecht married in 1436 Duchess Anna of Brunswick- Grubenhagen - Einbeck, with whom he had ten children. After the death of his father Albrecht was 1438 Duke of Bavaria - Munich. The 1440 is transmitted to him a royal crown of Bohemia he refused. Politically, he developed, apart from a nationwide campaign against robber barons in the years 1444 and 1445, hardly activities. 1455 Albrecht founded on the Holy Mountain to Andechs Benedictine monastery. He was regarded as extremely religious, which earned him his nickname the Pious, and let reform the Bavarian monasteries. In addition, he gathered numerous artists at his court.

Albrecht was buried after his death in the monastery church to Andechs.

Children

From Albrechts connection with the Augsburg Bader daughter Agnes Bernauer († 1435 ) were born children. On November 6, 1436, he married Duchess Anna in Munich ( 1420-1474 ), daughter of Duke Eric I of Brunswick - Grubenhagen - Einbeck and his wife Elisabeth of Brunswick- Göttingen.
