Albert III, Duke of Saxe-Wittenberg

Duke Albrecht III. of Saxe- Wittenberg (c. 1375/1380 in Wittenberg, † before November 12, 1422 ibid ) was the last Wittenberg Ascanians and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. Albrecht III is sometimes confused with his cousin Albert of Saxe- Wittenberg, Prince of Lüneburg.

Life

When Elector Rudolf III. 1419 was poisoned and died, took his younger brother Albert III. ( First mentioned 1407), also called Albrecht of the arms, the affairs of state of Saxony- Wittenberg. Albrecht III. found a run-down through many wars and a country empty treasury on his accession. Because of this, he could hardly afford servants and led a very lonely life. In order to develop revenue, he made the city of Wittenberg in 1421 the right to Bude interest in the market of the city dispute. He clashed with the citizenry so much in dispute that it almost came to an armed clash, as this right was for generations owned by the city of Wittenberg. Finally, the Elector Frederick of Brandenburg was drawn as a referee for help. That court held that the conduct of the citizenry against their rulers was inappropriate, but it was on the condition an apology to the sovereign rights of a market to. In the third year of his reign, the Elector died as a result of a fire calamity in a farmhouse in the Lochauer Heath, where he stayed with his wife on the hunt. The fire had come so close that he and his wife were able to clad only in her nightgown save through a window. Several of his servants perished in the flames. The Elector was so shocked by this event that he died a few days later in Wittenberg. He was buried in the local Franciscan chapel. Thus ended the Ascanian government in Saxony- Wittenberg.

Family

He was the son of Duke Wenceslaus of Saxony and married on January 14, 1420 Euphemia ( Offka ) of oil which the daughter of Duke Conrad III. of oil. This marriage remained childless. His widow was awarded in 1422 the castle in Liebenswerda as dowry and married his second wife in 1432 Prince Georg I of Anhalt -Zerbst. She died 1444th
