Albert Jacquard

Albert Jacquard ( born December 23, 1925 in Lyon, † September 11, 2013 in Paris) was a French population geneticist, social philosopher and author of popular science.

Life

Albert Jacquard grew up in a Catholic, upper-class parents' house. In 1934, he got in an accident his brother and grandparents. He graduated after the war training as a mechanical engineer and system engineer and was in government service in changing functions, so in the economic supervision of the state industry ( SEITA ) and employed in health care. In 1966 he completed a training on issues of demography and genetics in the United States and worked at Stanford. After his return, he worked at the Institut national d'études for Demographic ( INED ) and received his doctorate in 1970 and 1972 genetics in human biology. As an expert in questions of genetics, he was delegated from 1973 to 1985 the World Health Organization (WHO). After having been employed as a guest lecturer at the University of Geneva from 1973 to 1976, where he received a visiting professorship. The Université catholique de Louvain brought him between 1979 and 1981 and the University Pierre and Marie Curie in Paris 1978-1990 as a professor.

He wrote regularly for the newspaper Le Monde diplomatique and had between 2001 and 2010 a program on France Culture.

Jacquard was from 1983 to 1988 a member of the National Ethics Committee (Comité consultatif national d' éthique ). Jacquard engaged in a wide range of civil society initiatives, as against bullfighting, Free Software, supporters of the Russell Tribunal on Palestine. He was an atheist. In 1999 he ran on the run by Daniel Cohn- Bendit list of Les Verts to the European Parliament. He was a esperantist and supported in the European elections of 2004, the list Europe - Democracy - Esperanto.

Jacquard has published over fifty books that were held in popular science part, it has been translated into several languages. " There is no hierarchy of races, was his message."

Jacquard was awarded honorary doctorates of several universities, he was accepted in 1980 as an officer in the Legion of Honor and received the 2012 Grand Officer of the Ordre national du Mérite degree.
