Albert Kretschmer

Albert Kretschmer ( born February 27, 1825 Schweidnitz ( Świdnica ); † July 11, 1891 in Berlin) was a German professor, painter, costume watchers and head of the royal Schauspielhaus in Berlin.

Life and work

Kretschmer came to Berlin in 1842 and studied with Professor Carl Joseph Bega at the Berlin Academy. He lived in Berlin's Friedrichstadt, Behrenstraße 8 and had two sons: the historical geographers Konrad Kretschmer and the linguists and Indo-Europeanists Paul Kretschmer.

Kretschmer was known for his detailed drawings, watercolors and lithographs, and the estimates based on publications on German and international costumes and historical clothing.

In addition, he worked until 1889 as a costume designer at the Royal Playhouse.
