Albert Sercu

Albert Sercu ( born January 26, 1918 in Bornem, † August 24 1978 in Roeselare ) was a Belgian racing cyclist.

1939 Albert Sercu won the Tour of Flanders for amateurs. He then became a professional. In the following years he achieved numerous top rankings in major cycling races such as Paris -Roubaix, La Flèche Wallonne and Milan - Sanremo. In 1942 he became the Belgian vice-champion in the road race. His most successful year was 1947 when he won cross through Flanders, the Nokere Koerse and Omloop Het Volk and the individual road race won the silver medal at the Road World Championships. In 1951, he was also European champion in the two - team driving, together with Valere Ollivier. In 1952 he ended his cycling career.

Albert Sercu was the father of former racing cyclist Patrick Sercu. In Roeselare a street is named after him.
