Albert Vanhoye

Albert Cardinal Vanhoye SJ ( born July 23, 1923 in Hazebrouck, France) is a Catholic theologian and biblical scholar.

Life

After he joined the Jesuit order in 1941, Vanhoye studied at the Sorbonne, 1947-1950 philosophy at the Jesuit high school Vals -près- le Puy and 1951-1955 theology at the university of his order Enghien in Belgium. On 25 July 1954 he was ordained in Enghien by Henri Dupont priest.

Then Vanhoye studied until 1959 at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome biblical exegesis, was from 1959 to 1962 professor of New Testament exegesis at the Jesuitenhochchule Chantilly and in 1961 received his doctorate at the Pontifical Biblical Institute with a thesis on the literary structure of Hebrews. From 1963 until his retirement in 1993 he taught as a professor of New Testament exegesis at this institute. His main focus was on the Pauline Epistles, and especially the book of Hebrews.

In addition Vanhoye was from 1978 consultant to the Congregation for Catholic Education, 1980-1996 Member of the Council for Christian Unity and since 1990 consultant to the Congregation. In the same year he became secretary of the Biblical Commission. This office he held until 2001.

In solemn consistory on 24 March 2006 Pope Benedict XVI took him. as cardinal deacon with the title of Santa Maria della Mercede Diakonia e Sant'Adriano a Villa Albani in the College of Cardinals. At his request, he was excused because of his advanced age, from the obligation of episcopal ordination.

2008 Vanhoye kept the fast retreat for Pope Benedict XVI. From 2008 to 2010 he was Grand Prior of the Order of Constantine.
